Plan B is the first progestin-only emergency contraceptive to be approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration. It can prevent pregnancy within 72 hours after a contraceptive accident or unprotected sex. Plan B is safe and effective for most women.

Levonorgestrel

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Plan B

USES: Plan B is an emergency contraceptive that can be used to prevent pregnancy following unprotected intercourse or a known or suspected contraceptive failure.

HOW TO USE: To obtain optimal efficacy, the first tablet should be taken as soon as possible within 72 hours of intercourse. The second tablet must be taken 12 hours later.

SIDE EFFECTS: The most common adverse events in the clinical trial for women receiving Plan B included nausea (23%), abdominal pain (18%), fatigue (17%), headache (17%), and menstrual changes. The table below shows those adverse events that occurred in 5% of Plan B users. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: diabetes, possible pregnancy, unusual vaginal bleeding, allergies (especially to birth control pills). Tell your doctor if your normal menstrual period is late by at least 1 week. This medication is not recommended for use during pregnancy. Consult your doctor for more details. This medication passes into breast milk. While there have been no reports of harm to nursing infants, consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, especially of: other birth control medications (e.g., oral contraceptives, implants), anti- seizure medications (e.g., carbamazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin), rifampin. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, and vaginal bleeding.

NOTES: Do not share this medication with others. As with other oral contraceptives, this medication does not protect or prevent against HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.

MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, contact your doctor immediately.

WARNING: Smoking cigarettes while using this medication increases your chance of having heart problems. Do not smoke while using this medication. The risk of heart problems increase with age (in women greater than 35 years of age) and with frequent smoking (15 cigarettes per day or greater).

STORAGE: SStore at room temperature at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). Brief storage between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) is permitted.
